@Mike - loyal Republican and what we think of today as conservative weren't always synonymous. most of the current crop of Democrats with the exception of Kucinich would have been moderate Nixon Era Republicans like Jim Webb.

Change is great and welcome. However, characterizing Arlen Spector as a loyal republican is hardly appropriate. Infact, his record was hardly conservative at all. His change was an easy decision of political expediency riding on the wave of historic change forged by a popular new president. This is hardly change, seems like Spector trying to survive in the same old.

I agree that it is important to keep in mind that your changes may affect those you are close to but you have to be very careful in how much importance you give to that influence. In the end, change is not easy, especially when it comes to changing who you are and how you think. So if you're strong enough to reach that point where you are able to implement the hard-earned changes, you have to be prepared to do so despite the impact it might have on others.

Awareness is important, but do not let it inform your choices. In the end, you're the one who has to live when them and like u said, people rarely enjoy moving out of their comfort zones, so their perspectives are often limited and in their own favor.
